TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arnecia Hawkins scored 17 points and No. 21 Arizona State, which led by as many as 21, held on to defeat Marquette 90-80 on Saturday.
Arizona State, which saw its 21-point lead shrivel to eight, was 7-for-8 at the free-throw line in the last 57 seconds. Hawkins sank two and Elisha Davis 5 of 6. The Wildcats went 22-for-29 at the foul line.
Arizona State went ahead 65-44 on a Sabrina Haines 3-pointer late in the third quarter, and Marquette began to claw back. Allazia Blockton, Natisha Hiedeman and Erika Davenport combined on an 11-4 surge.
