The final score was Marquette 2, Illinois State 1, but that doesn’t come nearly close enough to explaining the tomfoolery that happened in this game.
Marquette got their first goal on an Olympico from freshman Emily Hess in the fifth minute of the game, except for a moment, no one was really sure the ball was in the net. At least one of the officials saw what I saw, namely an ISU defender headed the ball away from the net while standing behind the goal line, and thus they ruled that Hess’ kick had crossed the line.
Before the game was even 10 minutes old, the Redbirds had a goal wiped away by some odd refereeing.
