Xabi Alonso 'is Tottenham's No 1 choice to become their new manager - with Bayer Leverkusen boss' playing experience at Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich putting him above Feyenoord counterpart Arne Slot'

Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso has emerged as the primary target for the Tottenham Hotspur job after an impressive season at Bayer Leverkusen.

This comes after Antonio Conte's dismissal earlier in the season, followed by the sacking of interim head coach Cristian Stellini, leaving Ryan Mason in charge until the end of the season.

The 31-year-old has overseen two matches this season as Spurs came back from 2-0 down to draw with Manchester United before an entertaining 4-3 loss to Liverpool at Anfield.

After guiding Bayer Leverkusen into the semi-finals of the Europa League, Alonso is said to be the leading candidate for the vacant role at Tottenham, according to Dutch publication De Telegraaf.
