'We thought he was going to bring something special': Paul Scholes says Manchester United were so close to signing Ronaldinho in 2003 that the club had given him a shirt number before the Brazilian opted to join Barcelona instead

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes had revealed how the club came agonisingly close to snapping up Ronaldinho in 2003 - with officials even allocating the Brazilian star a shirt number.

The Red Devils looked nailed on to secure the signing of the exciting midfielder from PSG, before he made a U-turn and opted to join Barcelona.

Ronaldinho went on to enjoy a superb stint with the Catalan outfit - winning the LaLiga title twice and the Champions League.
