Wayne Rooney names AC Milan star Fikayo Tomori as the one real surprise exclusion from England’s 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup... as the Man United legends insists Gareth Southgate has gone with Eric Dier as ‘he fits into the back three’

Wayne Rooney has insisted that he was surprised to not see AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori in England's 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The former Chelsea youngster helped AC Milan claim their first Serie A title in 11 years last season and has massively impressed since making the move to Italy in search of regular first-team action.

The 24-year-old, however, struggled on his return to Stamford Bridge in the Champions League and was eventually sent off, which may have hampered his chances.

Either way Tomori was one of the notable absentees from Gareth Southgate squad as he opted to pick the likes of Harry Maguire, John Stones, Eric Dier, Conor Coady and Ben White ahead of him in defence.
