The afternoon before he was hurried out of the door at Manchester United, Ruben Amorim got one final thing wrong. He was not - as he claimed - the manager of the football club. He was hired 14 months ago as a coach and ultimately hasn't proved to be good enough at it.

Under the control of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and a newly assembled team of executives, United have undergone a root and branch transformation in terms of their football structure.

But underneath all of that, Amorim's brief was clear. It was to improve the team.
