Newcastle defender Fabian Schar missed the loss to Manchester City due to concussion... with medics deciding not to take chances after his collision with Lisandro Martinez in Carabao Cup final last weekend

Newcastle took Fabian Schar's concussion history into account before deciding to leave him out of yesterday's 2-0 defeat at Manchester City.

Medics decided to take no chances with the Swiss defender after a collision with Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez in last weekend's Carabao Cup final defeat even though he completed the game at Wembley.

Schar was involved in a serious concussion incident playing for his country in 2019 when he was knocked unconscious.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe explained his absence at the Etihad.

'He took a nasty knock to his eye and cut and bruise around that area (at Wembley).
