There was a moment, early in the second half, when the Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez approached a challenge he was second favourite to win and pretty much barged Jordan Henderson to the floor. As an illustration of this day and night United performance, that was as clear as it got.
Martinez is the United defender signed in the summer and who was written off after two Premier League games. This was his third and it went rather better for him. He was terrific, as were Erik Ten Hag’s United.
