Those four words served as shorthand for the time Brighton nearly won the Cup, became the title of a fanzine as the club plunged into crisis, and were later adapted for Smith’s auto-biography. ‘Gordon’s still dining out on it,’ quips former team-mate Gary Stevens. ‘It’s made him a fortune.
