Erik ten Hag hails Jimmy Murphy as the 'main person in Man United's history' ahead of iconic ex-assistant manager's statue unveiling - as Red Devils boss says the recognition is 'totally deserved' for rebuilding the club after the 1958 Munich air crash

Erik ten Hag has paid tribute to Jimmy Murphy hours before a statue is unveiled at Old Trafford in honour of Sir Matt Busby's former assistant.

Murphy is credited with leading United out of the devastation of the Munich Air Disaster in 1958 which claimed the lives of eight players and left Busby gravely ill in hospital.

The Welshman, who had been a pivotal figure in the development of the Busby Babes, took temporary charge and led United to the FA Cup final that season against all the odds. The statute ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 65 years to the day since Murphy led the team out at Wembley.
