The Reds took the lead after just 15 seconds of the contest at Crawley Town's ground when good work by Lauren James forced Seagulls goalkeeper Megan Walsh to put the ball in her own net.
However, Casey Stoney's side were unable to build on that dream start to the long away trip and were pegged back when Aileen Whelan headed in Brighton's equaliser on the brink of half-time.
