CHRIS WHEELER: FA Cup final defeat must not detract from a season of real progress for Man United, but the Red Devils face the prospect of watching City emulate their historic Treble

As the seconds ticked away towards a momentous win for Manchester City, the cameras panned around Wembley and focused on the great and the good of Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson grimaced alongside his former chief executive David Gill and current co-owner Avram Glazer. Not in his worst nightmares did Ferguson think the neighbours could be quite this noisy. Not far away in the posh seats at Wembley, David Beckham sat next to son Brooklyn and shook his head ruefully.

Peter Schmeichel and Jaap Stam were among the other United heroes of ’99 who were here to witness City take another step towards emulating their historic Treble, so unique in English football until now.
