'Prison immediately. No rapist can be applauded': Brazilian politician calls for Robinho to be jailed while his appeal against a nine-year sentence for gang rape in Italy is ongoing

A Brazilian politician has called for Robinho to be jailed 'immediately' as the former Manchester City star appeals an ongoing rape charge against him.

The 36-year-old was sentenced to nine years in prison by an Italian court three years ago for his involvement in the gang rape of a 22-year-old Albanian woman at a Milan nightclub in 2013.

Robinho, who denies the charges, has been suspended by his Brazilian side Santos just a week after signing for them as a result of the ongoing case. The club said it would allow the player to 'concentrate exclusively on his court defence in Italy'.
