LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Every Kentucky Derby has a distinctive personality. Last year's Derby, for example, was blunt and straightforward, eager to please but with a touch of playfulness. It had the personality of a bar-tender. Some Derbies, though, such as the 1999 version with Charismatic, Cat Thief, Lemon Drop Kid and General Challenge, can be opaque and complex, even deceptive. Still others are wild but entertaining extravagances, with every horse eager to indulge his impresario complex.
