XFL files for bankruptcy, owes St. Louis tourism bureau $1.6 million

ST. LOUIS — The XFL filed for bankruptcy Monday, saying that it owed millions of dollars to creditors, including $1.6 million to the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission, already struggling with coronavirus-related losses.

The filing actually names the St. Louis Sports Commission as one of the creditors, but the heads of both the sports commission and the tourism bureau said it was an error.

"It’s a mistake," said Sports Commission President Frank Viverito. "I think we were misidentified."

Viverito said the pair are often confused.

Kitty Ratcliffe said the same, adding that her agency had an irrevocable letter of credit that it turned turned over to the bank on Friday, the day the league announced it was suspending operations.
