Dick Stockton, who is believed to have called more major American professional sporting events on television than anyone, announced his retirement Thursday.

Stockton, 78, has broadcast NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL games across his TV career that has spanned more than half a century. Fox Sports, for which he has worked the last 27 years, says he has done at least 1,545 games on network television.

“After a fulfilling 55-year career, I've decided to step aside, enjoying the many memorable events I've been blessed to cover, and ready to enjoy doing more things away from the broadcast booth,” Stockton, who also worked for CBS and Turner, said in a statement.
