Rams notebook: Hekker survived back-to-back-to-back punts on Sunday

Rams punter Johnny Hekker was a busy man Sunday, averaging 47.6 yards on eight kicks. And that didn’t include two more punts called back due to penalties.

“A very unusual situation,’’ Hekker said of his back-to-back-to-back punts late in the third quarter of Sunday’s 24-10 loss to host Washington. Special teams coordinator John Fassel “said that’s something he’d never seen before. But we had guys on the punt team that stayed focused, stayed in the game and executed rep after rep after rep.’’

On Hekker’s first try, a 50-yarder, there were offsetting penalties on the Rams’ Benny Cunningham (illegal substitution) and Washington’s David Amerson (illegal block).
