He no longer is Young Bob Costas, as he was called by legendary radio host Jack Carney when both were at KMOX (1120 AM) 4½ decades ago. Or "YBC," the way former St. Louis NFL player, broadcaster and man-about-town Tim Van Galder greeted him until TVG died in January.
Costas turned 70 this week, and celebrated the milestone by having dinner with friends, evidently a low-key affair. There was no parade.
"The numbers change and people take note of it," he said. "That's about it."
Costas still has his fastball on the air, it's just that he isn't taking the mound as much as when he was at NBC.
