It was the first team meeting for newly hired Jeff Fisher as coach of the St. Louis Rams. As he looked out at his players in the team auditorium in Earth City, a chilling thought entered his mind.
“Auburn looks as good as these guys.”
That’s what Fisher told a close friend at the time. Fisher had a son playing at Auburn, so he was familiar with that team. Scary to think that his new NFL team, sitting right in front of him in street clothes, didn’t look any more physically imposing than a college squad.
Then again, the fact that the Rams didn’t pass the eye test that day in 2012 shouldn’t be all that surprising.
