Zeke Smith wanted to be known as a “Survivor” contestant.
Not a transgender “Survivor” contestant.
Last night, Smith, who had kept his gender identity a secret from all but one of the contestants on the show, was outed on national television by his tribemate Jeff Varner. Upon hearing the revelation, some of the other contestants on the show were in tears. Smith, himself, sat stunned.
“Why haven’t you told anyone you’re transgender?” Varner said to Smith in a moment that made television history.
Minutes later, Varner tried to apologize. But it was too late.
