D’Angelo Russell is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2019 NBA free agency after former Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving officially signs with the Brooklyn Nets. With Kemba Walker leaving the Charlotte Hornets for Boston, D-Lo is arguably the best point guard on the market and is expected to be heavily pursued. Of the teams rumored to be interested in the young point guard, the Los Angeles Lakers stick out the most. Could D’Angelo Russell return to the same team that traded him in 2017 to make space for Lonzo Ball, the second overall pick in the NBA Draft that year? After trading the rest of their roster away to the Washington Wizards, the Lakers have cleared enough cap space to pursue big-time free agents including D’Angelo Russell. Could D-Lo be the addition the Lakers’ backcourt needs with a loaded front of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Kyle Kuzma?
Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Durant and other big time NBA free agents are still not sure where they will wind up. The Lakers could spend all their money on the former Raptors and Warriors stars or take a slightly cheaper player in Russell and build around him. Could D-Lo sign for less money to allow the Lakers continue to build out their roster almost entirely? The Lakers also have to consider how Russell would fit in with the team. Could he take a back seat to LeBron James and company after a career year in Brooklyn?
