Lakers News: Byron Scott Would Only Shut Down Kobe Bryant "If We’re Nowhere Near Playoff Contention"

The Los Angeles Lakers have seen their star player struggle mightily so far this season, but there are no discussions about shutting him down for the year.

"If we're nowhere near playoff contention in March...then we might discuss that." Coach Byron Scott told reporters Wednesday. The Lakers are currently 12-27, and they occupy 14th place in the Western Conference. The Lakers are 10 games back from eighth-place Phoenix, and with the 8th-place Suns currently on a 50-win pace, Los Angeles would need to finish 38-5 to reach that mark and give themselves a real shot at the playoffs.

Bryant is shooting a career-low 36.9% from the field, and he didn't help that statistic with his 3-19 performance in the Lakers' loss to the Miami Heat on Tuesday. Bryant's playing status is currently being determined on a day-to-day basis, and Scott and the Lakers have been careful not to make any commitments about his playing time or availability.
