MLB Notes: Yankees Veteran Elects to Leave Organization, Red Sox Pitcher Getting Tommy John, Mets Shocking DFA

A New York Yankees veteran elected to leave the organization on Saturday. Infielder Nicky Lopez, who started his season with the Los Angeles Angels and later made his way to the Chicago Cubs, opted out of his minor league deal after spending about a month with the Yankees, as he will now test free agency.

Additionally, the Boston Red Sox announced that right-hander Tanner Houck will undergo Tommy John surgery, after he has been shelved on the IL since mid-May. The starting pitching situation in Boston gets worse as the 29-year-old Houck will shift his focus to a speedy recovery.
