MLB Notes: Yankees Sign Catcher, Astros Closer to IL, Dodgers All-Star Has Elbow Surgery

The New York Yankees signed catcher Rob Brantly to a minor league contract on Tuesday as he looks to provide some depth in his second stint with the Bronx Bombers. The 36-year-old backstop made three appearances for the Miami Marlins this season before he was designated for assignment on his birthday last month.

In other news, Houston Astros closer Josh Hader has been placed on the injured list with a shoulder strain. Manager Joe Espada has yet to name a new closer, as a closer-by-committee approach seems likely.

Finally, in more unfortunate pitching news, Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Tony Gonsolin underwent elbow surgery on Tuesday, sidelining him for the next 8-10 months.
