Dodgers to convert Jordan Schafer from an outfielder to a pitcher?

On Wednesday, the Dodgers and Jordan Schafer agreed to a one-year minor league deal. What is unusual about this deal is that the Dodgers are reportedly interested in using Schafer not only as an outfielder, the position he has played his entire MLB career, but also as a pitcher. This may sound completely random, but apparently there is reason to suspect Schafer could be successful on the mound. Schafer was drafted in the third round in 2005 by the Atlanta Braves out of high school where Schafer was considered a 'good pitching prospect.'

But what could the Dodgers be going for in this move?
