Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani Accomplishes Feat Not Done Since RBI Became Stat in 1920

The greatness of Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani was on full display Wednesday afternoon.

Against the St. Louis Cardinals, Ohtani served as both the Dodgers’ starting pitcher and leadoff hitter in the series finale at Dodger Stadium.

Ohtani threw four dominant innings, recording eight strikeouts on 53 pitches with 13 whiffs. Five pitches the right-hander had thrown were higher than 100 mph during his eighth start of the season.

The two-way star also hit a two-run home run, 109.5 mph off the bat and 440 feet to center field.

Since RBI became official in 1920, Ohtani is the only MLB player to hit a home run, strike out eight-plus batters, drive in more runs (2) than he allowed (1) and draw more walks (1) than he allowed (0), per OptaSTATS.
