Dodgers’ Dave Roberts Says Evan Phillips Needing Tommy John Was ‘Surprising’

The Los Angeles Dodgers can’t seem to get a break from pitching injuries.

Right-handed reliever Evan Phillips will reportedly undergo Tommy John surgery on June 4, scratching another pitcher from the Dodgers’ staff for the remainder of the season.

“It’s surprising,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “More disappointed for Evan, but he just wasn’t responding to the rest and then trying to ramp back up. Ultimately, (surgery) was kind of the advice and the route he decided to go.”

When the Dodgers placed Phillips on the 15-day injured list earlier this month, the organization was hopeful the stint would be short-term.
