Like Tony Gwynn late in his career, Philip Rivers is getting overdue help

An evolving story to this NFL season has a San Diego feel to it.

Philip Rivers is reaping a windfall in his 14th NFL year, much as Tony Gwynn did late in his baseball career.

Just as the Padres pitched very well for Gwynn in his mid-to-late 30s, the Chargers* are playing very good defense for Rivers as he nears his 36th birthday.

In a team sport, talent needs talent to go places.

Gwynn, despite his good work, went through several dead-end seasons with the Pads before pitchers such as Kevin Brown, Trevor Hoffman and Sterling Hitchcock helped him lift the 1998 club to the World Series.
