Ex-USC & Chargers voice Kelly dies

Tom Kelly was known best as the voice of USC athletics for some five decades, but the broadcast legend also handled Chargers games on radio for seven seasons, including the club's Air Coryell heyday.

Kelly died of cancer Monday morning at his home in Encino. He would have turned 89 on Wednesday.

Kelly had been with USC for about 15 years when he was hired to do Chargers games beginning in 1976. He called the club's games through 1982, meaning he was in the booth during four of the club's greatest seasons (1979-82).

A few summers later, when Kelly was here for a San Diego Trojan Club banquet, he spoke with Union-Tribune columnist Nick Canepa about his time with the Chargers.
