Column: Shula-Beathard gamesmanship added volts to Dolphins-Chargers rivalry

The death of Dolphins Hall of Fame coach Don Shula this week brought to mind San Diego scenes from Shula’s visits decades ago. Back then, the Chargers won five consecutive home games against his Miami teams. These were entertaining games, adding flavor to one of football’s better bi-coastal rivalries.

Revisiting one more Shula episode in Mission Valley, today’s journey goes back 25 years.

Go to Jack Murphy Stadium. It is the day before the AFC playoff game between the Dolphins and Chargers in January 1995. The winner will stand one victory short of the Super Bowl in Miami.
