Column: Is Trent Williams the player to get Philip Rivers on a playoff path?

“Forever our leader” is an ode you’d expect to see on a postage stamp or a coin, but in January it’s how Tom Telesco described Philip Rivers.

What Telesco implied in three words was that Rivers, who was entering his contract year, will spend all of his NFL career with the Chargers before someday going into the team’s Hall of Fame.

Telesco’s point was well and good; however, there’s a football dynamic now putting the GM to a test involving his quarterback.

Rivers needs more help if he’s to have a shot of reaching his first Super Bowl this winter, and it’s likely up to Telesco, who inherited Rivers in January 2013, to provide it.
