Column: Beyond football, Tom Bass offered classy example of life well lived

Sez Me …

Tom Bass, one of my favorite people, one of the best and brightest men I’ve known in my life, has passed away.

Damn. I am beyond saddened, numbed by the mere thought of never speaking to him again — at least in this world.

Left behind but still with us are his intelligence and wit, his passion not only for football, but arts and letters, love for his wonderful wife, Michele, and his family, honesty, and ability to get along with just about everybody who entered his orbit.

I entered Tom’s in 1982, my rookie year on The NFL Team That Used To Be Here’s beat, and his first as defensive coordinator under old friend Don Coryell (Tom was Don’s only paid assistant early on at at San Diego State).
