Column: Another mistake-filled game puts Chargers, Rivers near a crossroads

It looks like a fine NFL career is near a crossroads for Philip Rivers, who still makes slick throws but is tossing too many interceptions.

The sport of NFL football, which is only getting faster, seems to be speeding up on Rivers, not always, but more often and at big moments.

The San Diegan threw four interceptions Monday night in Mexico City, the final one into the end zone with 18 seconds left, sealing a 24-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs that all but ensured Rivers and the Chargers (4-7) won’t reach the playoffs for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons.
