COSTA MESA, Calif. -- The NFL awarded the Los Angeles Chargers a seventh-round compensatory pick last week, one of 32 compensatory choices awarded to 15 different clubs.
According to the league’s collective bargaining agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than acquired in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.
Usually, the number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four.
Following that formula, the Chargers lost Manti Te’o to the New Orleans Saints and Danny Woodhead to the Baltimore Ravens, while adding Russell Okung in free agency
A rule change by the league last season allows teams to trade compensatory picks.
