Chargers mourn death of minority owner Pernicano

George Pernicano, a minority owner of the Chargers since their move to San Diego and a successful San Diego restaurateur, died on Thursday, the football team announced. He was 99.

“The George I knew was full of life and love and full of energy,” former Chargers linebacker Jim Laslavic said Thursday afternoon.

In 1961, Pernicano bought a three-percent stake in the Barron Hilton-owned Chargers when the team moved from Los Angeles to San Diego’s Balboa Stadium. He held on to the share.

“I'll tell you how much it's worth,'' he told the Union-Tribune in 2010.
