Weaver is in the midst of a down year, at 4-8 with a 4.75 ERA. The 32-year-old right-hander began 0-4 with a 6.29 ERA, then posted a 1.98 ERA over a five-start stretch in May, gave up 20 runs (19 earned) in 26 innings to begin June and then landed on the shelf.
A seven-week break in the middle of the season, for a guy who has thrown the 11th-most innings in the Major Leagues since 2007, could be a real benefit.
"If it means he's good from now until the end of the year, then it was well worth the price you had to pay to miss him," Scioscia said.
