Umpire set for stitches after scary hit to head

Plate umpire Paul Emmel was able to leave the field under his own power and was set to receive stitches after a scary incident Thursday night when he was hit in the head by a bat during the Oakland Athletics' win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Angels pinch hitter Jefry Marte was at the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning when he lost control of the bat on a follow-through. The bat slipped out of Marte's hands and struck Emmel in the head.

Emmel fell to his knees, and his head was bleeding profusely.
