CLEVELAND – Not even Joe Smith is immune to whatever has infected the Angels and turned a seemingly playoff-bound team into one that can hardly do anything right.
Smith, one of the most consistent performers on the entire roster, suffered the worst outing of his nine-year career, allowing five runs without recording an out in the eighth inning of an 8-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Saturday night.
“Apparently nothing was working,” Smith said. “I didn’t get an (expletive) out.”
Smith’s meltdown dropped the Angels 21/2 games behind the Texas Rangers for the final wild-card spot.
