ANAHEIM — Two pitchers neared history Monday night at Angel Stadium.
Jhoulys Chacin stood perfect through four innings, while Justin Verlander followed right along.
After Chacin sat down the three Detroit Tigers batters in the top of the fifth inning, the two had retired a combined 27 batters to start the game.
If Verlander could equal the feat in the bottom half, the right-handers were set to equal the major-league record.
The Dodgers’ Mike Morgan and the Montreal Expos’ Mike Morgan retired the first 30 batters on July 28, 1991, at Dodger Stadium. Morgan finished with the 11th perfect game in baseball history on that afternoon.
