Last season as the Angels went in Spring Training, there was a battle for their final rotation spot and some bullpen slots. At the same time, the New York Yankees were figuring out how to align their organizational catching depth. One name that was in the discussion was Omar Martinez, a catching prospect out of Venezuela that signed with the Bronx Bombers in 2018. Despite being a non-roster invite to Spring Training last season, Martinez made some noise for himself when he took Gerrit Cole deep in camp. Now, Martinez will have a chance he can offer to the Angels as the team has brought him in on a minor league deal.
