Angels Notes: With a new pitch, Kirby Yates is trying to stick

Kirby Yates is trying to win a job in the Angels bullpen. Yates, who is on his third organization, has allowed just one run in six innings so far this spring.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Kirby Yates is hoping a new pitch can help him get off the Middle Reliever Merry Go Round.

Yates, a right-hander the Angels claimed on waivers last year, began throwing a split-finger fastball this spring, and so far it’s helped him to allow just one run in six innings, with seven strikeouts, in the Cactus League.

“So far it’s been pretty good,” Yates said.
