'What a time to be alive': Fans are left baffled after Liverpool's new signing Arthur Melo is subbed off for ex-Anfield star Jay Spearing while playing for the U21 side in the Papa John's Trophy... with the Brazilian continuing his road to full fitness

Liverpool's Under-21 side saw a strange substitution in their Papa John's Trophy clash against Rochdale on Tuesday as new signing Arthur Melo was taken off for former youth prospect Jay Spearing, now 33.

Brazilian midfielder Arthur continued to build-up his fitness as he looks to make a mark in Jurgen Klopp's first-team squad as he got a run out in the Under 21's 1-0 defeat, but who he was replaced by raised eyebrows.

Spearing, who played 55 times for the Reds after coming through the academy, is back at his boyhood club in a player-coach role, and he filled in for Arthur with just over an hour on the clock.
