Stewart Downing announces retirement from football

Former Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has announced his retirement from football.

Downing made 91 appearances for the Reds after signing from Aston Villa in July 2011.

The 37-year-old called time on a playing career that saw him make more than 700 appearances for six clubs - Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Villa, Liverpool, West Ham United and Blackburn Rovers - on Monday.

Downing, who won 35 caps for England, scored seven times during his two seasons at Anfield and was named Man of the Match after the Reds beat Cardiff City on penalties in the 2012 League Cup final.
