Ross Barkley and Robbie Fowler have lead the tributes to Everton scout Sid Benson who died on Wednesday aged 74.

Benson was a renowned talent spotter and extremely popular character around Merseyside's football hotbed and helped the likes of Francis Jeffers, Danny Cadamarteri, Barkley and Leighton Baines among many more to make the breakthrough as footballers.

England midfielder Barkley paid tribute to his former mentor on social media on Wednesday night, tweeting: 'Sad to hear Sid Benson has passed away, only spoke to him last night. Rest in peace mate, thanks for everything.'
