Rangers close to signing Ben Davies for £4m from Liverpool after the English defender was left out of the Reds pre-season plans having not featured for the club

Rangers are on the brink of signing defender Ben Davies for £4million from Liverpool.

The Ibrox club moved to secure the Englishman as a direct replacement for Calvin Bassey, with the Nigeria international arriving in Amsterdam to finalise his £20m move to Ajax.

Davies, 26, had numerous options south of the border but jumped at the chance to move to Scotland after failing to make the breakthrough at Anfield after joining last summer.

Having come through the system at Preston North End, he had loan spells at York, Tranmere, Southport, Newport County and Fleetwood.
