Michael Owen has revealed he was desperate to move back to Liverpool as soon as he left the club to sign for Real Madrid in 2004.
Owen went on to Newcastle and Manchester United after the Bernabeu in a glittering playing career spanning 17 years, but enjoyed his best football at Anfield by a considerable distance.
After coming through the youth set-up, he scored 158 goals in 297 appearances for the first team, and was keen on a return to the club in the latter stages of his career.


Speaking in a new book of players' stories titled Ring of Fire, he said: 'At every stage - every summer - I was on the phone to Carra (Jamie Carragher) telling him to find a way to get me back.
