Liverpool FC news: Chief Executive departs club earlier than expected

Liverpool have announced that chief executive Ian Ayre will leave the club at the end of February.

Ayre was due to leave at the end of the current season, but will depart immediately and take up a role with German second-tier club 1860 Munich, on a date yet to be confirmed.

The 53-year-old has been at Liverpool for a decade, joining the club in 2007 as commercial director, before taking a place on the board of directors in 2009.

Ayre was instrumental in the exit of Liverpool's previous owners, controversial North American duo Tom Hicks and George Gillett, paving the way for Fenway Sports Group's takeover in 2010.
