Liverpool close in on deal to sign Jorg Schmadtke as their new sporting director... with the Reds hoping the ex-Wolfsburg chief will be in place ahead of huge summer transfer window for Jurgen Klopp's side

Liverpool are in advanced talks to make Jorg Schmadtke their new sporting director and want him in place for the start of the summer transfer window.

It has long been a source of speculation over who will replace Julian Ward, the current incumbent, since he stated his intention to step down last November.

Liverpool had been linked with a number of candidates, including Paul Mitchell, who is currently with Monaco.

But Schmadtke, 59, a well-respected figure within German football, received a solid recommendation from manager Jurgen Klopp during discussions with club owners Fenway Sports Group and is now heading to the formalities of a contract.
