Liverpool and Napoli were already guaranteed their place in the Champions League last 16 so controversy should have been elsewhere in Europe but in the 52nd minute, the wretched hand of VAR touched this game and added another chapter to this perpetual modern debate.

Napoli, really, ought to have left Anfield with a win. When Khvicha Kvaratskheila whipped a free-kick into the penalty area, Leo Ostigard span away from Virgil van Dijk and planted a header past Alisson Becker.
