It was seven minutes before half time when Conor Coady was hurt. Liverpool seemed certain to score when Andrew Robertson drilled a ball across the face of goal but Coady flung himself at it and somehow did enough to put off Diogo Jota and Mo Salah as they tried to apply the finishing touch. His desperate defending came at a cost, though.
Coady lay on the ground, writhing in agony, beating his hand on the turf and signalling that he needed his attention. He was treated for four or five minutes and his ankle was heavily strapped. But he refused to be substituted.
